King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) can trace its origin to the Thonburi Technology Institute (TTI) which was established on February 4, 1960 by the Department of Vocational Education, Ministry of Education. TTI has as its objective the training of technicians, technical instructors and technologists. By the virtue of the Technology Act, enacted on April 24, 1971, three technical
institutes under the Department of Vocational Education, namely Thonburi Technical Institute (TTI), North Bangkok Technical Institute, and Nonthaburi Telecommunication Institute, were combined to form one degree-granting institution under the name of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology (KMIT) constituting three campuses. TTI thus became KMIT Thonburi Campus. In 1974, KMIT was transferred from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of University Affairs.
A new Act was enacted on February 19, 1986; the three campuses of KMIT became three autonomous institutions, each having the status of a university. KMIT Thonburi Campus henceforth became King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi (KMITT). On March 7, 1998 as announced in the Royal Gazette, KMITT became King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). KMUTT is the first among public universities in Thailand to receive full autonomy. Its administrative system is now patterned after international government owned universities. The new act gives KMUTT total control over its budget, allows it to own and manage property, and grants authority to set up new faculties and departments, as well as introduce new academic programs

During the 9th Japan-Thailand Joint Trade and Economic Committee Meeting held in Kobe, Japan in 1989, the delegates from the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations (Keidanren – now Nippon Keidanren) and the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) realized that in order to enhance industrial development of Thailand, engineering programs, where all lecture and laboratory courses would be taught in English by highly qualified faculty members with doctoral degrees, needed to be established.
A cooperation agreement among Keidanren, FTI, and Thammasat University was reached in 1992 to establish bachelor degree programs in engineering at Thammasat University with initial funds provided by Keidanren and FTI. After two years of successful operation, the "International Institute of Technology (IIT)" was founded on September 16, 1994. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the Cornerstone Laying Ceremony of a new building at the Rangsit Campus of Thammasat University, using part of the initial fund for the construction. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand graciously granted the Institute a new name, “Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT)”, on June 28, 1996.
On October 2, 1997, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology’s Inauguration Ceremony of its name and building. In 1999, FTI provided a parcel of land with an existing building at Bangkadi Industrial Park (BKD) for SIIT’s use for 30 years. In June 2001, the former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun inaugurated a new building at Bangkadi for Information Technology and Computer Science programs.
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the inauguration of the Sirindhralai Building at Bangkadi on June 28, 2006. This new six-storey building houses the Electronics and Communication Engineering, Engineering Management, and Management Technology programs, a library, a computer center, laboratories and classrooms.

Chiang Mai University was founded in January 1964, under a Royal Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. CMU was the first institution of higher education in the north, and the first provincial university in Thailand.
We have four campuses together, the main campus, Suan Sak campus, is located about 5 kilometres west of the city center. Set against the backdrop of Doi Suthep Mountain, this campus occupies an area of 615 acres (249 hectares). Here you will find the Office of the University, the Faculties of Agriculture, Architecture, Business Administration, Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Fine Arts, Economics, Law, Mass Communication, Political Science and Public Administration, the College of Arts, Media, and Technology, the Graduate School, our three Research Institutes, the Academic Support and Community Services Units, including our newly opened International Centre for Education (ICE), Autonomous Organizations, all of the Campus Resource Facilities and Services, and major sports facilities.
A little closer to the city, the Suan Dok (‘Garden of Flowers’) campus occupies an area of 110 acres (45 hectares). This is the Health Sciences site and here you will find the Faculties of Medicine, Associated Medical Sciences, Nursing, Dentistry and Pharmacy, and the Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, known locally as Suan Dok Hospital, the largest teaching hospital in Northern Thailand. Built in 1940, the hospital is affiliated with CMU’s Faculty of Medicine. Many joint programs providing medical and educational support for physicians and medical students have been set up with other hospitals and health centres, both inside and outside the Chiang Mai area. The hospital’s three buildings have a capacity of 1,300 beds plus 400 auxiliary beds. In 2008, Suan Dok Hospital served 823,806 outpatients and 387,939 inpatients.
About 5 km south of the main campus, the 864-acre (350-hectare) Mae Hea campus is home to the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Agro-Industry.
CMU’s latest acquisition is the Lamphun Sri Bua Baan campus. Located about 55 kilometres south of Chiang Mai on a 1,890-acre (765-hectare) site close to Lamphun’s industrial centre, this campus provides additional training and research facilities with emphasis on industrial management and efficient energy utilization. Programs currently offered at the Sri Bua Baan campus include the College of Arts, Media, and Technology’s BA in Modern Management and Information Technology, and the Faculty of Engineering’s MSc. in Industrial Management, apart from the MSc. Program for Electrical Engineering.
